My certificate expired

Long courses

The first aid level 1, 2 and 3 courses are all valid for 3 years from the last day of your course in terms of your OHSact requirements. South African law says you have to provide reasonable care for anyone on your premises.

To renew a level 1, 2 or 3 course you will need to do the current level or the next level. Eg Level 2 is expiring you can redo only level 2 or do level 3.

You have up to 3 months after it expires to renew the certificate (This is the unofficial grace period for Department of labour that most inspectors accept). However practically you will probably have forgotten a significant amount of the content. Each level assumes you remember the previous level. So level 2 assesses level 1 & 2. Level 3 assesses level 1, 2 and 3.

To assist with this recap we recommend you redo the previous levels on our blended learning platform. There is no cost if you have done the Traditional or Blended Pulse Point course before. If you have not done your previous level with Pulse Point then you will need to pay a small fee for the online access. With some other providers you will need to also attend some practical days to catch-up missed content. You have up to 6 months after your certificate has expired and you have booked to complete the online and be re-certified. Please note that you will still not have a valid certificate during this time for your OHSact requirements, but will at least be able to show an inspector you are taking steps to correct the infringement, which they might be accommodating with.

Short courses

The CPR, Basic first aid, BLS for HCP and presentation courses are valid for 2 years. These courses are typically requirements of individual company, franchisor and Industry groups Since they are not mandated by a single organisation, each company will have their own requirements.

The most notable being in swimming where first aid level 1 needs to be done every 3 years and CPR needs to be done every 1 or 2 years.

Fitness professionals generally need to only renew CPR every 2 years and level 1 every 3 years.

Nursery schools, primary schools and high schools generally have designated first aiders who renew their level 1, 2 and/or 3 every 3 years. The rest of the staff are then normally only trained in Basic first aid and CPR.

Please check with your company what needs to be done when. We have a variety of options of individual, groups, weekdays, weekends, online, in person and more to accommodate you.
